Arriving after the huge success of the S96 Pro, it was a standout product for the Chinese brand that recorded really big numbers. Its special feature? Night vision camera! Let's see what's interesting about the GT model.

Design, size and materials

This time I start with the dimensions: Doogee S96 GT is large 168 x 91 x 15.5mm and weighs approximately 310 grams, the weight is not featherweight but I must say that the company has worked well with the weight balance so when I read the weight, I thought it was a mistake as it seemed much lighter to me.

The back cover is the aesthetically differentiating part: it is partially rubber on the black parts and metal on the gold parts, including the camera bump at the top. Aesthetically it is quite nice, but In case the gold finishes are not to your liking, the company offers three different colors, including a dark brown with orange accents that could be a little more understated.

The Impact resistance is good, but metal frames tend to be preferred less than rubber ones because they could dent in falls and it would be more obvious, while with rubber ones it is easier to mask the aesthetic defect.

For the rest, the smartphone is the same as all the indestructible cell phones that are circulating at the moment and that I have had the opportunity to test: it is equipped with the latest standards IP68, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H and has a Gorilla Glass type front glass.

As for the physical keys, the company has inserted the volume rocker, power button and flush-fitting biometric sensor, quite accurate but perhaps not “touched” in the right way due to the aesthetic choice made by Doogee. On the left side, however, there is the slot for Sims and MicroSDs and the usual programmable key of choice while at the bottom there is space for the USB-C connector and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is also a big return that I haven't seen for a long time on board a smartphone: frontally, next to the ear capsule, Doogee has inserted an RGB notification LED And only now that I have it back in my hands do I realize how much I miss such a feature in today's smartphones.

Screen

The screen is a unit of 6.22 ″ inches with a resolution of 720 × 1520 pixels and a density equal to 270PPI, in line with other similar smartphones; the panel is an IPS LCD and, once again, I am forced to complain about exactly the same thing as the other rugged ones I have tested recently.

Doogee S96 GT also It does not support 90Hz like all its colleagues, has a good maximum brightness, but lacks in all remaining technical aspects, such as temperature Screen color which is decidedly cold compared to normal and also the colors are a bit too dull. As long as you need the colour adjustments in the system menus, you can only improve very little: however, if you don't have another smartphone next to you to compare the screen, you may not notice these defects that I have mentioned, but it is only fair that I tell you about them anyway.

Hardware and performance

We find a Mediatek processor, the Helio G95 at 12nm Octa-Core, a Mali-G76 GPU and 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM flanking the 256GB of internal storage expandable also via MicroSD up to 512GB.

The hardware It is certainly not the best of all, but I must say that compared to other competitors on this front, Doogee has made a good choice.; This data sheet allows it to perform well in virtually all usage scenarios, although software optimization should not be taken as an example.

In the benchmarks the values are on the same level as devices with similar hardware, Call Of Duty Mobile runs it with high details and with a consistent and good framerate.

He The speaker is unfortunately only mono, the quality is not very high, but the volume is sufficient.. In addition, Doogee S96 GT also supports NFC, FM Radio, Bluetooth 5.0 and 5Ghz Wi-Fi networks.

Software

Doogee S96 GT comes with Android 12 and security patches updated until June 2022. The interface is customized in a very essential and almost imperceptible way, good translations and obviously excellent compatibility with Google services, of which we find the suite preinstalled at the first start. Among the system applications on board, the company is now famous Toolbox with compass, flashlight, level, sound level meter and so on.

The smartphone is also Android Auto compatible even without cable, but unfortunately it does not have Widevine L1 certification so you will not be able to enjoy streaming at maximum resolution, but it does not matter in these products.

Camera

The camera equipment of the Doogee S96 GT was what surprised me the most during these days of testing; normally smartphones of this type and category are not configured as good devices in the photographic field, but this S96 GT is probably the exception in recent months.

The main lens is a 48MP f/1.8, followed by an ultra-wide (which is more unique than rare) 8MP f/2.2 with 130° FOV, a 2MP f/2.8 portrait lens, and a Sony-produced Night Vision 20MP f/1.8 that's the same one we've seen on other rugged phones in recent weeks.

The The final photographic quality seemed good to me in favorable lighting conditions; the main lens takes good photos, with good color balance and good light management. focus is quite fast in all contexts, even in videos, where it adapts very quickly to changes in framing. What happens, sometimes, is that the shots are slightly dull as if the lens is dirty, but in reality it is not: the focus probably gets stuck (it has only happened to me a couple of times, to be honest), but it quickly returns to shooting as it should.

Even the ultra-wide lens was a big surprise: be nice guys, this isn't the smartphone of the century in the field of photography, but for a rugged one we say it does its job and maybe Doogee is starting to understand that it's appropriate to aim it at something more concrete with its smartphones.

The night camera, therefore, takes good photos but obviously they are in black and white.: little useful in the daily life of each of us, more sensible instead In the professional field where we may find ourselves in the dark (perhaps at a construction site) and need to take some photos. Discreet 32MP selfie camera, but it needs a lot of light to produce usable and shareable photos, perhaps on a social network.

As for the videos, Doogee S96 GT also records in 4K at 30fps, but in practice the quality is not very high, especially due to the digital stabilization alone, which does not do a perfect job.

Autonomy

Doogee S96 GT has a Good 6350 mAh battery that amply covers a day and a half of stressful use, and in some cases it can even last up to two full days. Almost unexpectedly, I saw the wireless charging symbol on the back, a peculiarity not very common in this type of product.

In fact, the company has implemented support for the wireless charging up to 15W while by cable, through the power supply supplied in the package, up to 24W maximum; the charging times in both cases are quite long, but given the autonomy you will not be forced to recharge in the middle of the day.

Doogee S96 GT Reviews

Do we recommend it? Yes, but only if you do extreme sports, for professional purposes or if you need an almost indestructible mobile phone in your daily life.

The Doogee S96 GT has officially arrived in the Chinese brand's store at around 250 euros, a starting price from which you can save a few more coins with the promotions available at launch; the figure is adequate for the features of the smartphone, which compared to many other competitors in circulation has better hardware, a good photographic sector, wireless charging, NFC and a good level of general performance in daily use.

Can buy it on Aliexpress and in Doogeemall (with a launch offer).

En el último periodo tecnológico hemos visto aparecer numerosos móviles rugerizados.
